5A - Identifying Local Opportunities

  • “In South Florida, we need to transform our communities to address climate change and sea-level rise”
    • Over the past 100 years, the area has seen a 9-inch rise in the sea level. However, with predicted carbon dioxide levels rising the sea level could continue to rise by 3 feet by 2060. The quality of water in the Everglades is decreasing. People in the Miami area should do their part to stop carbon dioxide buildup by refraining from activities that produce greenhouse gases.
    • The sea level in the urban area of Miami is rising and could destroy many buildings. That would make the Miami beach area unlivable.

  • “What are the best sunscreens for swimming and sports?”
    • Dr. Leslie Baumann, a dermatologist, goes over the things to look out for when choosing the appropriate sunscreen. If a person is playing a sport that requires their hands to be tightly gripped to an object they should use a spray. Then the longer a person is outside the higher the FPS a person should use. For lips use a lip balm with SPF.
    • The problem is there are multiple types of sunscreen but no sunscreen that is the be all end all. There is always slight tweaks that are made to make the sunscreen perfect for that activity. The problem does include the need for more options of sunscreen for people with allergic reactions and wanting to play a specific sport.
    • Anyone that goes outside for extended periods of time

  • “More people than ever live in downtown Miami — and they're starting to raise families”
    • This article explains that millennials aged from 25-44 are the largest group of residents in downtown Miami. The number of family households has also increased by nearly 42%. This has made finding housing in downtown Miami difficult because all the multi-bedroom apartments are being rented out. In addition, traffic wait times have increased.
    • Due to the rise in the number of families, there are not enough amenities in Downtown Miami to satisfy their needs. They need activities for their children that are safe. They need family-friendly restaurants. In addition, there are not enough apartments for people who want to live downtown and have a family.
    • Anyone that lives in downtown Miami
  • “Help homeless vets find a home”
    • In Broward County, it is estimated that there are 2,318 homeless people in 2018, with there being over 200 homeless veterans. However, Missions United is working as a United Way program to help homeless veterans financial and with any mental illness.
    • The problem is that over 200 veterans are homeless in Broward County and many of these veterans may have mental illnesses.

  • “South Florida's national parks need some care”
    • In this article the explains the importance and cost to keep South Florida National Parks running. The national parks in Florida host 9000 jobs. The largest is Everglades who host nearly one million tourists each year. However, after years of heavy tourism on the parks and Hurricane Irma, the parks need some renovations. For example, the tourism center in the Everglades was one thing damaged by Irma. The whole list of additional damages at the Everglades will take 90 million dollars to rebuild.
    • The problem is that South Florida’s National need more money for maintenance after heavy tourism traffic and Hurricane Irma.

  1. Hi Trenton,
I agree with you in that more people need to take notice of the rising sea levels in Miami. In a few years, entire areas of Miami will be rendered uninhabitable, and the city and its residents must began massive preparations for what is coming. I agree in that it is in their best interest to begin planning sooner rather than later.

  2. Hello Trenton,

All of the opportunities you chose caught my interest especially the one about the sea levels rising. I am very passionate about protecting our planet but especially passionate about protecting our ocean. People don't understand the complexity behind rising sea levels and the harm that they actually take. Not only can it change costal geography but most important hurt wildlife that need the shore lines to continue reproducing.

  3. Hi Trenton,

I think you did a good job at identifying local opportunities and raised a few good points. The rising sea level in Florida seems like it should be a more important issue than how people currently treat it since it can have a direct impact on their lives. Your formatting was a bit confusing but overall it was a great post.
