Choosing a segment:
I chose a segment of young creative college students that will rely on computers for both school and their professional life. One was Kelly, a graphic design major at UF. Another was Jonah, who creates commercials online for organizations that want to throw events. Then lastly, I interviewed Melinda, who is certified in adobe photoshop and illustrator.
Interview Details:
Jonah, in particular, was concerned about the number of computers he would go through in a short time. He explained that he wants the best computers who have the capability to handle the software needed to make his commercials.
Kelly mentioned that humans are responsible for the environment regardless of their profession. She hopes one-day computers are completely recyclable and are as easy as leaving the trash out. She also was concerned by the average cost of computers so it is natural to think that computer recycling is similarly expensive. Kelly definitely thought companies would want their computers that they supply their employees wish to be taken away in an environmentally friendly manner.
Melinda noted that computers are needed by every aspect of society. She pointed out everyone has computers and that no matter what computers become obsolete. She also elaborated saying no one plans to get rid of their computer until their computer is starting to show its age.
What I learned:
I learned that people do not plan to get rid of their computers. This would leave room to make connections with businesses to set up contracts to get rid of their computers. This would be seen to help the businesses out in multiple ways by fixing a problem they may not be properly suited for and help them set up a “green” image. It was also noted they agreed companies’ information needs to be protected.
In addition, I learned that certain people should be targeted because they will go through computers faster than others who do not use computers for hours every day. Computers do age and that is not fixable. However, what can be done is by allowing customers to recycle their computers when they need to.
How I would describe this segment:
They all were in agreement that they will go through many computers even solely in their professions. This brought up a good point that people will vary in the number of computers they go through. This will all depend on their lifestyle and profession. This segment saw that businesses would be open to setting up recycling programs for both the green image and the idea that they may also not have a plan to get rid of their computers. They also want the information on their computer saved and cleared properly because they are in a career field that is shifting to independent contractors. This means that if any of their work is stolen off their computer it could end up helping a rival contractor.
Hi Trenton,
ReplyDeleteI think there's an awesome opportunity in the fact that most people don't have a plan for when their computer "dies." There is massive potential in this concept, you could end up teaming up with manufacturers and tech stores to offer a plan at the time of purchase and I feel like a lot of people would purchase it given the chance, I know I would.
Hello Trenton
ReplyDeleteThis research is very useful for your business plan. Replacement of computers will create great business opportunities for your plan. However, if recycle cost is much higher than creating a new computers from row materials, how could you persuade to use your service. I remember I watched a TV- show interview 2years ago, Lenovo' CEO said recycle cost is higher than creating a new one today.
Hey Trenton,
ReplyDeleteI feel like I would be one of your targeted customers. I use to run a videography company and everything was down from my computer. I was also a student at this time so you can imagine I was on my computer 24/7. Having so many files for school and work and personal things I feel that eventual all my files got mixed up and I never knew exactly what was on it when it eventually died. Thankfully I had an external hard drive due to the videography so I was able to back up my work but at the end when it was time to toss out the computer I was afraid to for fear of not having everything. Would you ever consider maybe having part of a service where you transferred all the current files and softwares to the external hard drive to give to your customer for an easy transition to their new computer especially for large companies?
